Rugs bearing the general label Afghan in fact come from various areas of the country. The names usually refer to the tribal group or region where they were produced.
The main traditional areas are Ersari, Baluch, Beshir, Tekke, Salor. Most rugs from these regions have a deep red ground with deep blue (looks black) with paler highlights with the distinctive gul design, often referred to here as elephant’s foot.
Other names include, Ziegler, Khan and Kazak
Some modern production is actually woven in Pakistan with Afghan materials and weavers.
